Workshop on Intelligent Learning Environments (WILE 2010)

Computers arrived to life more than fifty years ago, and they arrived to stay here forever, we can see them in any aspect of the modern life. Since then, researchers have been dreaming of make computers as intelligent as humans can be, or more. Education field is not the exception; we can see many programs to teach almost any subject matter; but, the real big challenge relies on providing personalized support to human learning in view of previous knowledge, affective states, learning styles, etc. A great variety of research have demonstrated computers can be very helpful in supporting human learning using Artificial Intelligent (AI) techniques, transforming information into knowledge, using it for tailoring many aspects of the educational process to the particular needs of each actor, and timely providing useful suggestions and recommendations. The current results we can find talk to us that we are not so far of our dream: it is just a matter of time and effort.

The growing usage of computers in education we see today offers an excellent opportunity for exploring new ways of applying AI techniques to education. It also delivers huge amounts of information in need of intelligent management, and poses big challenges to the field on topics such as some enlisted below.

Purpose and scope

The aim of this workshop is to bring together active researchers in the field of Intelligent Learning Environments (ILE) so that they can

  • present and discuss innovative theoretical work and original applications on the field,
  • exchange ideas,
  • establish collaboration links,
  • discuss important recent achievements in the field, and
  • talk over the significance of results in the field to AI in general.

In particular, the workshop aims to provide a forum for young researchers to present their ongoing research.

Call for Papers

Authors are invited to submit papers presenting original and unpublished research in all areas related to Intelligent Learning Environments, including descriptions of ongoing research work and position papers. Suggested topics include but are not limited to:

  • Web-Based Intelligent Tutoring Systems,
  • Intelligent learning management systems,
  • Intelligent learning objects,
  • Modelling, enactment and intelligent use of emotion and affect,
  • Natural language and dialogue approaches to ILE design and construction,
  • Authoring tools,
  • Applications of cognitive science,
  • Semantic Web technologies, and
  • Student modeling.

Accepted papers will be presented at the workshop and included in the proceedings, published as a book. In addition, some papers might be selected to appear in a special issue of the journal Research in Computer Science.

  • Registration deadline: Octuber 10, 2010.

Invited speaker

To have a more comprehensive analysis and discussion over the topics of the workshop, we will invite a renowned speaker (to be confirmed) to talk to workshop participants about her experience and give her opinion and suggestions about the works presented at the workshop.

Submission Details

Interested parties are invited to submit a technical paper written in English in LNCS Springer style, not exceeding 8 pages. The details of the format can be found at Lecture Notes in Computer Science: Information for LNCS Authors. The submissions must not contain authors' names or affiliations. They must not include either any information that may reveal the authors' identities. Submissions which fail to meet these requirements will be rejected without revision.

In order to submit a paper electronically, authors must send an e-mail with the subject: "WILE10 Submission" to Ramón Zatarain, Lucía Barrón, and Yasmín Hernández (see below for corresponding email addresses).
